A Bittersweet Dilemma

2019・台灣・48 minutes

Since I am a doctor by profession, I got to know many excellent nursing staff when I was practicing in the hospital. Whether they were nurses with professional licenses or intern nursing students in school, they all worked hard for the health of patients, but In the process of working together, I found that many people are facing long-term and similar difficulties: overtime work, damaged health, staggered day and night shifts, difficulty in taking care of family, lack of professional respect, frequent conflicts between nurses and patients, etc., which make them physically and mentally exhausted. , and even came up with the idea of changing careers. Taiwan trains about 15,000 nursing students every year, and there are about 7,000 qualified nurses who have successfully obtained certificates after graduation. However, after entering the workplace, about 3,000 people will eventually choose to leave; the average practice rate is 60%, which is far lower than the 93.6% and 83.2% in Canada and the United States. Taiwan has no shortage of training for nursing staff, but it cannot retain them. What exactly went wrong? I hope that through this documentary, nursing staff will know that they are not alone, and they will have the courage to stand up and gather more strength; let the public understand the inside story of nursing that is usually unknown, in order to arouse empathy and reduce conflicts between nurses; I hope that employers and the government can Face the problem squarely and work together to create a better workplace environment.
