Beyond the Music-The Barenboim-Said Academy
2019・Germany・53 minutes
In 1992, world-renowned Israeli Jewish conductor Daniel Barenboim and Palestinian scholar Edward Said met for the first time. As fellow humanitarians, the two hit it off and developed a deep friendship, which led them to jointly create the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra project. This later became the inspiration for the film "Orchestra of Exiles," which shocked the world. Subsequently, the Barenboim-Said Academy named after the two was established to realize Daniel's vision of allowing musicians to study philosophy and learn from an emotional level through text and philosophy. Most of the orchestra members come from Arab and Israeli backgrounds with opposing political and religious views. Students from the Middle East and North Africa account for as much as 80%, hoping to allow Middle Eastern musicians to break through the walls created by ideology and political systems through music, art, and expression, break down racial and religious barriers, and play the sound of peace.
