Shamans of the Blind Country
1981・Germany・Nepal・223 minutes
Before other religions appeared, "Shamanism" based on animism and shamans existed in the world. In the late 1970s, cultural anthropologist Michael Oppitz traveled to the remote areas of northwestern Nepal three times to get along with the local Magar people, study and record their shamanic customs with images. More than 18 months of filming, as much as 35 hours of footage, were finally edited into a nearly 4-hour mythological epic documentary. The film was lost for many years after it was first screened in 1981. It was not until 2013 that a copy of the film was restored and reappeared in front of the world.
