The story takes place at the end of the 18th century. Lady Susan Vernon (played by Kate Beckinsale), a young and beautiful widow, soon after her husband passed away, rumors spread that she was flirting and seducing men. In order to avoid people's gossip, she lived in her husband's uncle's country mansion and dealt with three men. She deliberately tried to join the upper class society. Not only did she want to find a good match for herself, but she also wanted to marry her daughter into a wealthy family. The three men are the young and handsome Mr. Regina de Courcy, the wealthy but foolish Sir James Martin, and the handsome married man Mr. Manwaring. Irresistible temptation, unscrupulous deception, true heartbreak, and the spread of rumors occur one after another in this polyamorous love relationship, making Lady Susan's marriage-seeking plan more and more complicated.
