A Way We Go
2001・Taiwan・129 minutes
A-Long runs an old-style funeral band that has been in operation for many years but now faces the challenge of not having anyone to succeed him. His eldest son, A-Hui, is not interested in music, while his second son, A-Ming, has talent but is physically disabled. A-Long's wife often advises him to dissolve the band sooner rather than later. A-Gou, a close friend of A-Hui, stumbles upon an opportunity where he and A-Hui steal a temple deity and sell it to an antique dealer. After tasting success, they steal another Buddha statue to sell. Veteran Taiwanese director Wang Tung uses the incident of the temple deity theft to portray the lives of people at the lower levels of society, showcasing different aspects of Taiwanese society.
