20 Days in Mariupol
2023・95 minutes
In 2022, as Russia launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian journalists from the Associated Press team, led by Chernov, were trapped in Mariupol for 20 harrowing days. Russian forces relentlessly shelled civilian areas and infrastructure from a distance, bringing the city to a standstill with no water, electricity, food supply, or internet. As the only international journalists left in the city, Chernov took up his camera to document the heartbreaking horrors of war: dying children, bodies torn apart, mass graves with bodies stacked layer upon layer, and a maternity hospital devastated by inhumane bombings. Every moment, Chernov and his team brushed with death. Soldiers risked their lives to extract them from the bombardment, aiming to show the world this dying city and sound an unignorable alarm for humanity.
