Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan: White Water

A photograph of the Liwu River inspired Lin Hwai-min to create this visually stunning dance suite. The curtain rises, and a woman in a white knee-length skirt walks toward a large-scale image of a colorful river.  Erik Satie's piano music flows like water, the dancers move, and the image gradually fades to grayscale, then to deep black, where only the white water surges. The river transforms, its ripples turning, its waves gleaming. Computer-generated green lines appear, flipping the image and cutting the flowing water. Geometric blocks of rapids move horizontally, and dancers walk slowly against the current, resembling a scroll unfolding.
