Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan: Dust

2022・Taiwan・24 minutes

Dust, set to Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8, is a masterpiece. The music evokes the horrors of the Dresden bombing, while the choreography transforms it into a lament for human suffering. Dancers, faces covered in dust, stagger with heavy steps, their ragged clothes echoing despair. Simple yet refined movements—trembling, dragging, falling—respond sensitively to the score. In the most haunting moments, they lie motionless, resembling a mass grave, before individuals emerge, each carrying profound sorrow. Performed with rare sincerity and passion.
