Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan: Portrait of the Families

2022・Taiwan・92 minutes

In 1987, the 38-year martial law rule in Taiwan came to an end. Stories about the 1947 massacre and the subsequent purges began to surface. Old photographs hidden for fear of political denunciation were gradually unearthed. The history was rewritten. Ten years on, in 1997, Lin Hwai-min used the projection of old photographs and oral recounts by families of victims from the turbulent era as backdrop and soundscape for Portrait of the Families to address the traumatic history of the island.
