That・This
2018・Taiwan・7 minutes
That・This is a moving-image and VR installation that reconstructs domestic spaces using smartphone-based 3D scanning. By intentionally shifting the camera during capture, the images become blurred and fragmented. Scans from different times and places are reassembled into a shared virtual space, where “that place” and “this place” coexist.
The project draws from my maternal family’s migration: my mother moved from Myanmar to Taiwan, her siblings later to the U.S. Despite the distance, weekly video calls sustain their bond. I guided relatives in the U.S. to scan their homes, merging their 3D models with our space in Taiwan—building a layered architecture of connection and separation.
A soundscape of spoken Burmese—conversations between my mother and her sister—echoes through the virtual space, sustained solely by technology over a decade. Within this terrain, “here” and “there” blur, held together by memory, language, and the quiet persistence of familial ties across space and time.
