Eat the Kimono
1989・Japan・United Kingdom・62 minutes
"Tear your kimono and eat it with all your strength." Japanese traditional dancer Hanayagi Genshu put forward this shocking argument. Hanayanagi, who is also a well-known avant-garde feminist activist, originally studied Japanese dance due to family tradition, but she was committed to liberation in both dance performances and personal opinions. She once publicly accused Emperor Hirohito of being the chief culprit of the war and threw firecrackers when Akihito ascended the throne. He expressed his opposition and was arrested and imprisoned; he also established an avant-garde dance theater to express his reaction to Japanese society through creation. "Eat your kimono" is her best argument against traditional constraints.
