There seems to be no end to the troubles faced by the young protagonist in Wei Te-Sheng’s debut feature. His parents run a market stall, but his father has a serious gambling habit. The problems begin one July day when Dad suddenly dies—leaving behind over a million in gambling debts. With his coffin in the living room (burials are taboo in July) and Grandma constantly complaining, our anti-hero is forced to abandon school and work as a doorman at a local crime-lord’s illegal casino. He soon realizes he’s not cut out to be a gang "brother," but tries to fit in. Then an "incorruptible" cop, newly transferred to the area, raids the casino to make a name for himself. Guess who ends up being the only one arrested?
