Gwangju Dialogue
2026・China・South Korea・28 minutes
As the tide of martial law receded, Gwangju — that citadel of democracy — fell into stillness. Memories of 1980 and 2024 had already sunk deep into everyday life, like sediments of time. Now that democracy has transformed from bloody tears of history into the very breath of society, beyond the need for words, what, in the end, has this country truly changed?
The impetus for making this short documentary stemmed from my interest in Han Kang winning the Nobel Prize in Literature and the political turmoil caused by Yoon Suk-yeol's declaration of martial law. During this period, I observed the growth of the country's democratic system and civic consciousness over the forty years since the Gwangju Uprising. Furthermore, a sentence on the cover of the book "Human Acts" deeply moved me: "In a world where dignity and violence coexist, the next Gwangju could emerge in any corner, in any generation." This became my reason for repeatedly visiting Gwangju.
