Adapted from the story of the same name in Pu Songling's "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio". It mainly describes how Yang Lian, an important minister of the Ming Dynasty, was killed by the eunuch Men Da of the East Depot, who sent agents Ouyang Nian to hunt down his descendants Yang Huizhen and General Shi and other remnants of the Donglin Party. Yang falls in love with the scholar Gu Shengzhai during their contact, and with his clever strategy, they defeat the pursuers. Huizhen gives birth to a son, but secretly leaves Gu and goes away, wanting to escape into Buddhism...
