Mary, a strong-willed woman from Wyoming, travels to New York to visit her son Sam, but she struggles to accept his Chinese acupuncturist girlfriend, Fang, and finds herself constantly out of place in the city. During the Thanksgiving dinner, cultural differences, generational conflicts, and tensions between mother and son reach a breaking point. After the meal, Mary accidentally injures her shoulder. Despite being previously rejected and judged by Mary, Fang still chooses to help her with acupuncture. This unexpected moment of connection leads Mary to confront her own prejudices. In the end, she accepts Fang and learns to respect the life and choices her son has made.
