In 1961, after enduring the atrocities of the Japanese and the hardships of the post-war period, the Ma family finally welcomed a stable and happy life. But fate was cruel; the two elders of the Ma family suddenly contracted terminal tuberculosis. To spare their parents from the suffering of the illness, Ma Shuisheng, along with his brothers, secretly sold land—without the knowledge of their father, who viewed land as life itself—just to raise money to buy morphine injections from Dr. Chen. Finally, three years after his parents fell ill, Ma Shuisheng had to make a difficult choice between the family's last remaining piece of land and his newborn son.
