The Archer (Digital Restoration)

1963・台灣・4 minutes

In Taiwan in the 1960s, a wave of energy among image creators was ready to stir up. They were beating the boundaries of film definition and creating experiments in film. "Hou Yi" was a hand-made experimental animation by Chen Yao-chi, who was studying for a master's degree in film at UCLA in the United States at the time, using "The Legend of Hou Yi Shooting the Sun" as the plot blueprint. The narration in the film comes from a four-year-old child of an American friend. After listening to Chen Yaoqi's oral narration of Hou Yi's story, he once again narrated his own interpretation in childish language. The difference between the Eastern classical soundtrack and painting style and the innocent tone of Western children also adds layer and interest to the film.
