Opening Closing Forgetting
2018・Taiwan・80 minutes
During World War II, Japanese Army Unit 731 conducted germ warfare experiments in Northeast China. Local people were exposed to anthrax or glanders, causing a large number of casualties. The surviving people had "rotten feet" that had been festering for more than 70 years and never healed. The memory of the war fades with the years, but the remaining pain can never be healed. The Chinese government, however, ignores this period of history because it does not want to frighten tourists. However, the trauma must be exposed and treated before healing is possible. This film spans ten years and records survivors and interviews with Japanese troops related to Unit 731. Without deliberately exaggerating the opposition, through close gaze, we can preserve this historical scar so that their stories will not be forgotten by time.
