A Brighter Summer Day
1991・Taiwan・237 minutes
"You want to change me? I am just like this world, and this world will not change."
This film is adapted from a real murder case that shocked Taiwan in the 1960s. At that time, teenagers often organized gangs to strengthen their young and weak will to survive. While the ignorant Xiao Si'r met his first love, he gradually fell into the dark world, and eventually committed an irreparable and shocking crime. Director Edward Yang used nearly 4 hours to describe the pain and struggle of the miserable young man, and used the fight between two gangs to illustrate the ideological opposition, writing the cruelest youth chapter in the history of Taiwanese films.
