"When I first met her, she told me that the most difficult thing about being a waiter is meeting a good customer."
This film depicts the high-end brothel "Chang San Shu Yu" in Shanghai at the end of the 19th century, as well as the entanglements and grievances between the brothels and their patrons. Wang Liansheng, who married early but indulged in pleasure, was torn between the willful Shen Xiaohong and the submissive Zhang Huizhen; the shrewd and ruthless Huang Cuifeng planned to let her benefactor redeem her life; Zhou Shuangzhu was calm and indifferent, as if she had no thoughts about love. Think... Hou Hsiao-hsien recreates the old splendor of the ten-mile foreign market in 37 shots, and the drama of love and scheming is staged in the intertwining scenes.
