Funeral Parade of Roses
1969・Japan・105 minutes
In an underground gay bar in Shinjuku, Japan, cross-dresser Peter killed his mother and fell in love with the bar owner, who was his father. The plot is like a gender-flipped version of Oedipal's Oedipal patricide, actually a mixture of drama and documentary footage. This film describes the gay scene in Tokyo in the 1960s, and the actors are all real gays. Regardless of the subject matter and shooting techniques, this film can be regarded as a pioneering work that cannot be ignored in depicting Japan's rapid post-war development. It is also an enlightening work that launched Japanese gay movies.
