Zhao's roommate, Feng, passed away. In the end, death reduces a person to mere dust; Feng’s once-imposing six-foot frame was reduced to a small urn no bigger than a wine jar after cremation. Life wasn’t much easier for Zhao, who was still scraping by in the same four-square-meter veterans’ dorm as if he had been forgotten by the world. According to Feng's last wishes, the village chief came to the dorm to collect his belongings and would soon take Feng’s ashes back to his hometown across the strait. However, Zhao stubbornly asked the chief to let Feng stay just one more day, simply because he wanted to reminisce with his old friend a bit longer. Unable to refuse Zhao’s request, the chief left Feng’s ashes behind. Zhao recalled fond memories of the two of them and Ah Feng, a sexworker woman who had brought them moments of joy and romance. So, Zhao decided to take Feng’s ashes to bid Ah Feng a final farewell, embarking on a journey to seek one last moment of warmth in life.
