Between the Stars and Waves
2022・Taiwan・Malaysia・52 minutes
In the Malaysian state of Sabah, there are as many as one million stateless people. Among them, 50,000 children cannot receive education and lack basic human rights such as medical protection. They fled here from different corners of the ocean and built their homes on the water. Gradually, satellite maps regarded this floating village as an island. This film was shortlisted for the Golden Horse Award for Best Documentary Short. Director Lau Kek Huat developed a unique historical theme and used his expert gaze to explore the various aspects of displacement.
