生於中國陝西西安市。1999年開始拍攝《鐵西區》，2002年以這部超過九小時的紀錄片一躍成為具代表性的中國獨立導演，作品包括《和鳳鳴》、《夾邊溝》、《三姊妹》、《死靈魂》等。2017年紀錄片《方繡英》獲盧卡諾影展金豹獎，2023年《青春（春）》入選坎城影展正式競賽，同年獲得第60屆金馬獎最佳紀錄片。
