Unknown to All: Island Histories
“Island history” does not seek to construct a more insular and exclusionary Taiwan-centered historical narrative. Rather, it invites us to see anew how islands have always existed within relationships shaped by empire, war, and migration. Islands have served both as bases for the expansion of power and as waystations for displaced workers, soldiers, and refugees; they have endured oppression while also becoming implicated in violence against others. As the camera crosses oceans and national borders, history ceases to be merely a story claimed by the state and becomes a series of lived experiences still waiting to be heard, recognized, and reckoned with.
