City of Jade
2016・Taiwan・Myanmar・100 minutes
The Myanmar government forces and the Kachin Independence Army are confronting each other, and the consortium that originally mined jade in the mountainous area was forced to temporarily evacuate the mining area. Groups of poor people, carrying simple shovels, rushed to the fairyland that did not belong to anyone for the time being to pick jade. They are dreaming of getting rich, and the dreamers include director Zhao Deyin's eldest brother who has just been released from prison. Following his brother into the mine, through video recording, he unraveled his childhood imagination of the mining area and understood his brother who risked his life in mining because he wanted to change the fate of his family. I also saw how people live in the poor and dark corners of Myanmar.
