Mishima: The Last Debate
2020・Japan・108 minutes
In 1969, thousands of left-wing students at the University of Tokyo gathered together, waiting for a showdown with the far-right nationalist literary giant Yukio Mishima. In the solemn lecture hall, Mishima exchanged one for a thousand, and the two sides had an impassioned debate. In the end, they respected each other because of understanding, and did not lead to the expected violence. This film restores unearthed footage recovered from Japan's TBS TV station, and adds interviews with student movement leaders from that year, trying to explore what ideals Mishima held one year before self-determination.
