Shu Lea Cheang's debut feature film, written by acclaimed Filipino-American writer Jessica Hagedorn, uses a science fiction setting to expose the interconnectedness of global environmental crisis and racist worldviews. The film follows an interracial lesbian couple who get entangled in a transnational crime involving the exchange of industrial waste via contaminated sashimi, and begin to form alliances with activist groups in developing countries to fight back against the mainstream. The film incorporates digital media and cyberspace, depicting a media landscape of hackers, public broadcasting, and transnational media. It explores the massive intrusion of network technology and foreshadows future conflicts between transnational media and information hackers.
