Hill Of No Return
1992・Taiwan・175 minutes
In the 1920s, during the period of Japanese rule, tenant farmer brothers Ah-Su and Ah-Wei hear the legend of the golden toad and decide to abandon their labor contracts to seek gold in Jinguashi. The miners, dreaming of wealth, are continually oppressed by the harsh colonial management of the Japanese authorities. In the isolated mountain town, miners and prostitutes sell their dignity, labor, and bodies day after day. Yet, alongside these struggles, feelings and whispers of rebellion begin to brew. On the silent hills, desertion, suicides, revolts, and mining disasters follow one after another.
