Banana Paradise
1989・Taiwan・149 minutes
The simple-minded son of a farming family, Men Shuan, originally served in the propaganda unit of the Nationalist Army. In 1949, he retreated to Taiwan with the army, initially fantasizing about eating bananas in Taiwan. However, he was soon suspected of being a Communist spy. While fleeing the military, he encounters Yuexiang, a widow, and her child. To take care of them, Men Shuan assumes the identity of Yuexiang's late husband, using his diploma to secure a job. This film explores the absurdity of Men Shuan's strange experiences while reflecting on provincial identity and offering a critique of the White Terror.
