In the mid-19th century, Bologna, Italy, was under the rule of the Papal States. A young boy from a Jewish family was secretly baptized by the family’s Catholic maid, making him a member of the Church. According to the law, he could no longer be raised by his Jewish parents. One night, soldiers took the boy away from his home, and under the Pope's authority, he was educated in Catholic doctrine. Desperate, his family launched a mission to reclaim their son. Their struggle set off a clash of forces that unexpectedly altered the course of Italy’s history.
