To Write from Memory
2025・United States・19 minutes
What starts off as a young filmmaker’s audiovisual diary soon expands into a confrontation with their own past. It is not easy to break out of a cocoon spun from motherly demands and grievances – especially when your body gets treated as a family matter, and when your need for autonomy is met with incomprehension.
To Write From Memory explores the seams that connect documentary and fiction, archive and memory. Through a window into the protagonist’s everyday, mundane moments intertwine with textural soundscapes to invite us into a bigger world in each present moment. At once deeply intimate and distant, the film reflects upon the ways we make sense our experiences about the past even though the past continues to be shaped in the present, evolving and unfolding as we move through different chapters of our lives.
