A Town Called Success
2013・Taiwan・75 minutes
There is a group of fishermen in Taitung, with an average age of more than 16 years, who make a living fighting powerful swordfish at sea. They do not rely on modern sonar fishing gear or satellite navigation, nor do they rely on gillnets that harm marine ecology. They rely only on their eyesight, physical strength, endurance and decades of experience in operating on the Kuroshio to be able to accurately hit their body weight with dart guns. Over one hundred kilograms of swordfish! This film goes deep into Taitung's fishing villages to present the marine culture, fishermen's life stories and the rise and fall of the swordfish fishing method. It faithfully depicts the maritime battles of swordfish sailors and the joys and sorrows of sea-fishing people. It leads us to further reflect on the increasing depletion of Taiwan’s marine resources and the dilemma of future inheritance.
