Someone Else's Shinjuku East
2003・Taiwan・102 minutes
Kabukicho, located at the east exit of Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, is known as Japan's "city that never sleeps." In the late 1970s, more than 10,000 young women came to Shinjuku to work in hotels for different reasons. There is also a group of men who abandoned their identities and stayed here illegally, making a living by engaging in massage. No one knows their past in Taiwan, let alone their future. Through an eighteen-month follow-up record, this group of people who have been stigmatized in Taiwan is described, and the human nature of survival in a complex environment is delicately presented, depicting these foreigners writing their own history.
