The legendary and helpless life of Puyi, the last emperor of China. He ascended the throne at the age of three and abdicated at the age of six. He experienced the fall of the Qing Dynasty, the restoration of Zhang Xun, the melee between the Beiyang warlords, the Manchu puppet regime, and the Cultural Revolution. From emperor to commoner, he witnessed the rise and fall of China in the 20th century. This film is the first Western film shot in the Forbidden City in Beijing. It won the 1987 Oscar for Best Picture, Best Director Bertolucci, and Best Original Film Score by Ryuichi Sakamoto. It is also a masterpiece in the acting careers of John Lone and Chen Chong.
