The Time to Live and the Time to Die

"This movie is some of my childhood memories." Every family has a hard-to-recite scripture, and Director Hou's family also has one. This film is based on Hou Hsiao-hsien's recollection of his childhood past, and tells the story of a Taiwanese family's joys, sorrows, birth, old age, illness and death through the mouth of the male protagonist Ah Xiao. My father from another province finally settled down here, my grandmother clamored to return to her hometown in China but was unable to do so, and my mother was no match for the death knocking on her door. When the elders in the family travel far away one by one, what kind of adults will A Xiao and his siblings become?
