Maya Deren, who is also a director, actor, producer, anthropologist, dancer and poet, was born in 1917 in a Jewish family in Kiev, Ukraine. Her family moved to the United States when she was a child. Known for her pioneering experimental films, independent filmmaking and voodoo beliefs, she was also an important promoter of avant-garde art in the 1940s and 1950s. Mirrors often appear in Maya Deren's works, and this film is like a mirror reflection, reflecting her inner world and outer image, and giving a glimpse into her young but mysterious and charming life.
